One of Tamil Nadu’s favourite actors, Thalapathy Vijay entered the politics and launched his new Political Party ‘Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’.

“I have decided to complete the film I have already committed to, without affecting the party work and completely involve myself in the politics of public service,” the veteran actor announced.
Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar or Vijay is among the highest paid actors in India. He played the lead role in 67 films. His movies are related to corruption, leadership, and family-oriented themes. Vijay’s father is director and producer S. A. Chandrasekhar and mother Shoba Chandrasekhar is a renowned Carnatic singer. Vijay has a son and a daughter and is married to a Jaffna Tamil now living in the UK.
The renowned 50-year-old actor conveyed his wish to bring about a new era in politics by announcing his plans to participate in the 2026 Assembly elections. The politician-turned-actor plans to stand candidates for all 234 positions in the state during the forthcoming assembly elections. Once the Election Commission grants approval, the party will commence its political journey. He stated that by means of humanitarian initiatives and assistance programs, the “Vijay People’s Movement” had committed itself to aiding the community. Vijay chose to pursue a career in politics because he couldn’t instigate political change in the existing environment.
Pointing to the viewed corrupt political environment of Tamil Nadu, Vijay committed to operate with a vision for South India, regardless of ethnicity and faith. He stressed the principle of equality, declaring that all individuals are born equal. Vijay emphasized that, in his view, politics is not a career but rather a true and heartfelt service to the public. After thoroughly studying politics and drawing insights from his ancestors, he proclaimed that politics is not simply a pastime but rather a profound aspiration.
A closer look of Political Landscape of Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has been dominated by two Dravidian political parties for a decade. One is ‘DMK’ and the other one is ‘All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgham (AIADMK)’. Both these parties together hold about a three-fourths per cent vote share of Tamil Nadu. Vijay may be targeting the remaining around one-fourth of the vote.
Since the 1970s, when AIADMK’s founder MGR positioned his party as the main opponent to the DMK, numerous actors have sought to disturb Tamil Nadu’s dual political framework.
